This member of Copper Base has been enjoying some Gingerbread Man baking. What careful decorating of your Gingerbread Man. Thank you for sharing the photos.
Hi everyone, how are you getting on with your weather watch? The weather is changing this week isn’t it. It is so interesting to notice the difference in the sky and how it feels on our bodies when we go outside.
Today we are going to continue thinking about measuring and do some comparing. Did you find lots of things in the scavenger hunt yesterday? Have a go at ordering them like this:
Cut up lots of strips of paper up into different lengths and order them. Talk about what you are doing with your grown up. Are there some the same length, how much longer is the longest strip? You can sort them in shorter and longer first.
In school we begin to learn to measure things using non standard units of measure some examples are below. It is really important that the measure you choose is the same size.
This pencil is 5 Paper clips long – the paper clips are the same size.
The paper hearts are the same size.
This man is 9 basket balls tall. The Basket balls are the same size.
Some of you are measuring like this and others are using rulers (standard units of measure). Why not use your ruler to measure how long two strips of paper will be? How long is the longest strip and how long is the shortest strip.
Now have a go at this activity. Measure yourself and see how tall you are. Choose some objects in your house to measure with. Make sure the objects are the same.
Practise measuring using either a non standard unit of measure or a standard unit so your are ready for some fun paper aeroplane measuring fun tomorrow.
Let’s do some measuring in maths this week. We are going to start with playing some fun games to get us talking about the vocabulary we use with measuring.
Scavenger Hunt
We are going on a scavenger hunt today – look at the sheet below and see if you can find things longer or shorter than a chosen object it does not have to be a pencil. Record by chalking on the ground, on a pieces of paper or on the chart below. Challenge yourself by comparing the objects and putting them in order of size. Some of you can use a ruler to measure.
This week we will be thinking about measuring and we have some fun games for you to play to help you learn about measurement and thinking about things that are long and things that are short.
We would also like you to look at the weather each day and record what you see. Go out into your gardens with your grown up or look from your window and look at the sky – you could use the sky scan that we made a few weeks ago. Be careful not to look directly at the sun.
Record your findings in a chart like these below? You can record in any way – your parent could video you telling us about the weather or you could draw what the weather is like. Use the sheets below as a guide.
