Maths Task
Hi everyone, how are you getting on with your weather watch? The weather is changing this week isn’t it. It is so interesting to notice the difference in the sky and how it feels on our bodies when we go outside.
Today we are going to continue thinking about measuring and do some comparing. Did you find lots of things in the scavenger hunt yesterday? Have a go at ordering them like this:
Cut up lots of strips of paper up into different lengths and order them. Talk about what you are doing with your grown up. Are there some the same length, how much longer is the longest strip? You can sort them in shorter and longer first.
Strips activity
In school we begin to learn to measure things using non standard units of measure some examples are below. It is really important that the measure you choose is the same size.
This pencil is 5 Paper clips long – the paper clips are the same size.
The paper hearts are the same size.
This man is 9 basket balls tall. The Basket balls are the same size.
Some of you are measuring like this and others are using rulers (standard units of measure). Why not use your ruler to measure how long two strips of paper will be? How long is the longest strip and how long is the shortest strip.
Now have a go at this activity. Measure yourself and see how tall you are. Choose some objects in your house to measure with. Make sure the objects are the same.
Practise measuring using either a non standard unit of measure or a standard unit so your are ready for some fun paper aeroplane measuring fun tomorrow.
