Longer Than and Shorter Than

Maths Task

Hi everyone, how are you getting on with your weather watch? The weather is changing this week isn’t it. It is so interesting to notice the difference in the sky and how it feels on our bodies when we go outside.

Today we are going to continue thinking about measuring and do some comparing. Did you find lots of things in the scavenger hunt yesterday? Have a go at ordering them like this:

Cut up lots of strips of paper up into different lengths and order them. Talk about what you are doing with your grown up. Are there some the same length, how much longer is the longest strip? You can sort them in shorter and longer first.

Strips activity

In school we begin to learn to measure things using non standard units of measure some examples are below. It is really important that the measure you choose is the same size.

This pencil is 5 Paper clips long – the paper clips are the same size.

The paper hearts are the same size.

This man is 9 basket balls tall. The Basket balls are the same size.

Some of you are measuring like this and others are using rulers (standard units of measure). Why not use your ruler to measure how long two strips of paper will be? How long is the longest strip and how long is the shortest strip.

Now have a go at this activity. Measure yourself and see how tall you are. Choose some objects in your house to measure with. Make sure the objects are the same.

Practise measuring using either a non standard unit of measure or a standard unit so your are ready for some fun paper aeroplane measuring fun tomorrow.

Information about worms

Good morning everyone!

We hope you are enjoying your minibeast investigations, especially worms!

Today we would like you to find out some facts about worms…….and make an information poster showing all the things you have found out!

You could make your poster look a bit like this

Some good information about worms……

I’m sure you can find out lots more!

These films give lots of information!

This is fun too!!!

Measuring

Maths Task….

Let’s do some measuring in maths this week. We are going to start with playing some fun games to get us talking about the vocabulary we use with measuring.

Scavenger Hunt

We are going on a scavenger hunt today – look at the sheet below and see if you can find things longer or shorter than a chosen object it does not have to be a pencil. Record by chalking on the ground, on a pieces of paper or on the chart below. Challenge yourself by comparing the objects and putting them in order of size. Some of you can use a ruler to measure.

Measuring games

Have a go at these fun games to get you using some vocabulary involved with measurement and measuring.

Vocabulary we use….

Longer than, shorter than, long, short, small, big, smaller than, bigger than, tall, short, compare, millimetres, centimetres, metres, size

Mini Beast Literacy

Good morning everyone!

We hope you enjoyed a day finding out about the oceans and all the creatures who live in them.

TODAY we are back to MINIBEASTS!!

Look at this….

  Its a wormery!

You need sand, soil and some stones……..and of course worms!

https://rainydaymum.co.uk/make-wormery-explore-happens-underground/         these are instructions to make a simple wormery in your garden. Then you can see what worms do under the soil!

The fun part is digging for worms!

You can make a list of what you need and write some instructions for a friend.

Also, don’t forget to read today……..

This is a good reading activity – the information is so interesting. Tell your grown up one interesting fact.

Or this game

Remember to check your words too

What’s the weather like today?

Hello everyone,

This week we will be thinking about measuring and we have some fun games for you to play to help you learn about measurement and thinking about things that are long and things that are short.

We would also like you to look at the weather each day and record what you see. Go out into your gardens with your grown up or look from your window and look at the sky – you could use the sky scan that we made a few weeks ago. Be careful not to look directly at the sun.

Record your findings in a chart like these below? You can record in any way – your parent could video you telling us about the weather or you could draw what the weather is like. Use the sheets below as a guide.

What is the weather like today?

Measurement games on their way this week.

Maths challenge

Don’t forget to keep your brains growing with counting and number recognition. If you have a TT rockstars account please keep practising on there.

These problems you can do at any point during the day – have a go.

Choose a problem…..

3 block towers

Hidden Jewels

Ladybird Box

or you can….

Don’t forget to do some daily counting. Click on the link done the side of the blog to remind you of the post it note number activities or the number of the day worksheet.

Try counting on your splat square, make a number line or play find the number in your garden.

World Oceans Day

Good morning everyone!

We are celebrating our beautiful seas and finding out more about how we can look after them and keep them safe.

Below is a lovely film to watch……

https://www.ourplanet.com/en/video/biome-tour-of-our-coastal-seas/

Watch this……how many words can you think of to describe the amazing ocean?

Make a list………

https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/2020-02/WWF_Plastics_Explainer.pdf

Look at this poster. Everyone in the world uses too much plastic. Can you make/design a poster telling everyone why we should use less?

CHALLENGE   can you think of a way you can use less plastic in your house? Have you done this already?

Have a look at this and see if you can learn the names of the different oceans in the world.

This shark fin looks fun to make!

Or maybe

We think you will enjoy this song too!
